ABOUT

All about
FirstLine Vitality

The therapeutic potential of exercise in managing depression is increasingly recognized in the medical community. According to the article "Exercise as a Treatment for Depression" by Carl Zhou and Nicholas Fabiano, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) on May 6, 2024, supervised aerobic or resistance exercises of moderate to vigorous intensity can significantly reduce depressive symptoms. The efficacy of exercise is shown to be comparable to first-line treatments such as psychotherapy and medication.

Critical Aspects for Success:

  • Addressing Psychological Barriers: Individuals with depression often face low motivation and energy levels, making tailored support essential for sustained engagement.

  • Specific Exercise Prescriptions: Clinicians provide a referral to a structured, supervised exercise program where frequency, intensity, time, and type are professionally managed. Patients are engaged in the process, supporting adherence through collaboration and personalized support.

  • Behavioral Change: Adapting strategies to patients' stages of change can support both the initiation and maintenance of exercise routines.

According to the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) 2016 Guidelines, exercise is strongly recommended as a first-line monotherapy for managing mild to moderate major depressive disorder (MDD) and as a second-line adjunctive treatment for moderate to severe MDD. This recommendation is supported by Level 1 Evidence.

Exercise is an evidence-based, effective, and well-tolerated first-line treatment for mild to moderate depression. It offers a compelling alternative or complement to traditional treatments, particularly for individuals seeking non-pharmacological options. Its integration into structured mental health programs can enhance accessibility, engagement, and outcomes.
